Ugandans working in Oman could be in for better deals following efforts by the Minister of State of Labour, Employment and Industrial Relations, Esther Anyakun, to initiate a memorandum of understanding with Muscat.

Earlier this week Anyakun led a delegation to visit Oman where they held a bilateral meeting with the Minister of Labour of Oman, Mahad Said Ali Baawain, regarding opening up a new market for Ugandans.

According to ministry sources, the meeting agreed to initiate an MoU to expedite the process of Labour Migration in order to officially recruit Ugandans in Oman.

“Hon. Anyakun commended the relations between the two countries and encouraged Hon Baawain to visit Uganda and explore the investment opportunities here,” a source said.

Anyakun’s visit to Oman will be a welcome move given that most of the narratives by girls and women there have in the past pointed to inhumane treatment and sexual harassment.

It is estimated that at least 6770 Ugandans are working in Oman as casuals, semi-skilled and skilled employees.

The developments come just weeks after the senior minister for gender, Betty Amongi, visited Qatar and held bilateral talks with authorities in Doha.

The talks resulted in an MoU to ensure the safety of Ugandans working in Qatar.
